


So there I was, watching a sci-fi movie when I see this giant table that looked a bit like a “peg/pin-art board” that was automated and could produce 2.5-D images. Well, it wasn’t long before I found myself asking “how would I make that?” The solution I came up with was to use ferro fluid and a solenoid to create a sort of fine tune-able liquid linear actuator.
Unfortunately, my initial designed failed, “spectacularly.” I’m not 100% sure why. But my assumption is that I scraped off some of the protective coat and caused a short. In my second design(Top Right), I’ve created a reservoir for the ferro-fluid that keeps it separate from the solenoid. Now, it’s just a matter of getting more ferro-fluid and magnet wire; and, testing the new design.
